Gardentopia

THE MORPHOLOGY OF A GARDEN
IRSINA, ITALY
June 16, 2019

In a square named Carlo Marx, in the village of Irsina, a garden named Gianni Rodari hosts a curious ecology of plants, people and others. The seeds grown in this garden are of a wild sort, they speak “lect” – a language only understood by the locals. This “lect” cannot be written, only spoken or sung. The “lect” changes with each season – over the course of a year, it is totally unrecognizable if one has not (at)tended to the garden.
Over the last years, many of the original keepers of the garden, have passed on to other villages or into other forms and the “lect” is now nearly extinct. There is only one word that remains throughout the ever-changing
lect- p’zz’cantò. An association has been formed to protect this most ancient form of the lect. Each year a human antennae broadcasts the lect in a dance – a pyramid of voices climb the sky and wildly scatter the lect through Irsina. This human antennae roams through the village and some fragments that seem to remain unchanged are sung in the chapels and in the schoolyards. Some say the birds are the true keepers of the “lect”. If you listen closely, you will hear a common affect in the flight patterns of the winged creatures soaring above the garden.
